Gallipoli, Beirut’s fifth studio album, marks a return to the roots of Zach Condon’s creative journey. This album was born when he reconnected with his old Farfisa organ, reminiscent of the instruments used in his acclaimed early works, Gulag Orkestar (2006) and The Flying Club Cup (2007). After a unique recording process spanning New York and Berlin, including a period of recovery from injury, Condon and his band, alongside producer Gabe Wax, traveled to the serene landscapes of Puglia, Italy. Here, they immersed themselves in a month of intense studio sessions, each day filled with 12 to 16 hours of recording, set against the backdrop of Italy’s stunning coastline.
This immersive environment brought a new level of visceral energy to Gallipoli, making it one of the best indie pop albums to buy. The raw sounds of their instruments, including every creak and off-note, are woven into the fabric of the tracks, creating an authentic listening experience. The imperfections and technical quirks add to the charm, making this album a true gem in Beirut’s discography.
