In 1957, the legendary Miles Davis, riding high on the success of his collaborations with the remarkable Gil Evans, convinced Prestige Records to give Evans his own record date. The resulting album showcases the brilliance that music aficionados had recognized since Evans’ days as an arranger for Claude Thornhill in the 1940s and his contributions to Davis’ iconic Birth of the Cool sessions.
With compositions written for just 11 instruments, Evans masterfully employed his skills in dynamics, motion, and harmonic voicings to craft orchestral effects that evoke the richness of a much larger ensemble. This innovative approach inspired his musicians to deliver captivating improvisations. Among the stellar soloists featured are trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, saxophonists Steve Lacy and Lee Konitz, and Gil Evans himself, marking his debut as a recording pianist.
