Originally envisioned as a platform for Damon Locks, a Chicago-based multimedia artist and activist, the Black Monument Ensemble has blossomed into a dynamic collective of artists, musicians, singers, and dancers. This vibrant group shares a mission rooted in joy, compassion, and intention, with members ranging in age from 9 to 52. Among them are talented instrumentalists and fellow IARC recording artists like Angel Bat Dawid and Ben LaMar Gay.
Their debut album, Where Future Unfolds, released in 2019 by International Anthem, received glowing accolades, ranking #3 on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of the Year” and #25 on WIRE Magazine’s list of top albums. It was even hailed as “The Best Album of 2019” by BBC/Worldwide radio icon Gilles Peterson.
Now, with their latest release, NOW, the ensemble channels the emotions of a tumultuous summer in 2020. Recorded safely in the garden of Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio, the music captures spontaneous moments of connection among BME members, who had not played or sung together until then. For Damon Locks, this project transcended mere album production; it was about gathering to create art and share a powerful message. He reflects, “It was about offering a new thought, resisting the darkness, and expressing possibility. It was about questioning, ‘Since the future has unfolded and taken a new and dangerous shape… what happens NOW?’”
